More children suffer back pain

Babies and ChildrenA recent survey conducted by the British Chiropractic Association revealed that childhood back pain has reached an all time high in the UK.  Almost one third of British children aged 6-7 suffer from back pain, with 45% of children having suffered some kind of back pain before reaching the age of 12.

It’s well known that watching TV and playing computer games are popular past-times among children today, with sporting activities taking a back seat all too often.  However, the survey revealed that as many as 10% of 8-9 year olds do no sport at all.  It is important to get the balance right as inactive children take these habits with them into adulthood.  Playing for a local team or joining a club can encourage kids to keep active.

Children are also carting more and more books and equipment between home and school.  Heavy school bags are cited as one of the causes of back pain, although more worrying is the fact that many children are not using rucksacks (which should be worn correctly on both shoulders).
